Slides from the UWA workshop at Paris-Web 2007

The Paris-Web 2007 conference is now over, and we can take the time to let you know how the workshop went – and to give you access to the live material.

The whole Paris-Web conference was a real pleasure to attend and to participate in, filled with passionate people on both sides of the auditorium. In the eternal words of Chris Heilmann, “the list of speakers read like a who-is-who of the francophone web scene”, to which I’ll only add that it was also mostly true for the attendees.

What about the workshop, then, you might ask? It went pretty smoothly, even if I might not be too objective, being the one who handled it – with the noticeable help of Netvibes co-conspirators Maurice and Romain. There were around 20 attendees, of all origins and skill levels, so the decision to go with a “UWA 101″ kind of workshop was probably the best one. We had 1:40 to let them all in on how to build a basic widget, what are the available JavaScript properties and methods, what the templates and controllers look like, etc. And it was just about enough time to tell it all and have a few minutes left for questions :)

The Paris-Web workshops were kindly hosted at the INSIA engineering school in Paris, which allowed attendees to try and build a widget live, thanks to the available computers.

But let’s just cut to the chase: here are the slides we used for this workshop.

These have been translated into English from the original French ones, which are also available online.

Obviously the slides cannot transmit the speech and the dialogs with the attendees, but hopefully this will help you getting the gist of it. Contrary to the keynotes, the workshop weren’t filmed, so that’s about as far as we can go without having to reenact it all :)

But we have a slight bonus: those who were interested in the UWA cheat-sheet we previewed before, will surely be delighted to know we have release an English version of the preview. We already have lots of ideas on how to improve it, but don’t hesitate to let us know about yours!

And now for something completely different: more pictures from the workshop. Thanks to all those who attended, those who asked questions, and those who took these pictures!

These are (c) Mathieu Drouet (IZO), used with permission. He also shot the one headlining this post, and was kind enough to process these quickly specially for this post…

Here are a handful more from my live support Maurice Svay & Romain Huet, and one by Raphaël Goetter, all taken from Flickr. Maurice’s (the first two) are copyrighted, Romain’s and Raphaël’s are (cc-by).

About these pictures, please note that I am not one to put my face everywhere I can, but the computers in the room made it hard to shoot attendees other than by showing the top of their hair. So, you mostly get pictures of me… Also, remember that it was an engineering school, which might explain the poker-event announcement on walls and screensavers :)

Can’t wait for Paris-Web 2008!
