Setting your regions right in Ecosystem

Ginger is now open to everyone, and you can all see the new functionalities.

Among these is the integrated search: you don’t need to go to Ecosystem to find new cool stuffs to add to your personal page or your Universe, you can simply search Ecosystem and directly receive the corresponding list of feeds and UWA widgets (note that MiniAPI modules are only searchable through Ecosystem, and cannot work on Universes).

One of the particular thing that is worth mentioning is the enforcing regionalization of the search in Netvibes: a user can only find items that have been set to All regions, or his particular region. For instance, my own Netvibes page has it’s Local Content option set to France, which means that items that have been set to specific regions other than France won’t show in my search.

Regions in Ecosystem

This is worth mentioning simply because you might have to set a local item to regions others than your own. The issue in this case is that you wouldn’t be able to test its “findability” through in-Netvibes search.

So take the time to set your widget’s regions right when adding a new local item to Ecosystem. You can add up to three regions, or none at all (which means that your items would be available for all regions). In order to keep local widgets to pollute the search results of regions they were not built for, we ask to be strict about these settings: you should really only apply an item to all regions if and only if it is indeed a global widget (Google service, Twitter, Yahoo, etc.). If your widget is local (which we hope it is ;) ), it would be better off with proper regionalization.

All of this, for the cause of better regionalization, and of relevant local widgets :)

Is this new “local search” already working ?

I have set my Local Content to USA (and language English) but if I search for “trafic” result are:

    -La circulation dans votre ville
    -Info lignes
    -Info Bus et Tram Bordeaux
    -Sytadin

    Oh my God, “China (Taiwan)”?

Whatever Chinese gov’t claims, the fact is Taiwan operates itself with its own gov’t; Which it has been doing that for 60+ years. Calling the region “China (Taiwan)” would upset its restidents; though I have to admit calling Taiwan a “Country” would probability upset Chinese.

Most international websites would simply write “Choice your country/region” or “Choose your region” instead of “Choose your country”, and list “China”, “Hong Kong”, “Taiwan” without brakits.

I like Netvibes, but please please correct it. By the way, some of the widget from China doesn’t really apply to Taiwan; these content providers, e.g. Baidu, never enter the Taiwanese market.

What if a netvibes user like myself has interest in more than one region. How does that user go about searching for “regionalized” widgets of interest?
I believe users should also have the option to select 3 regions of interest or something like that.
